Zappia Racing season wrap up

Now Seven Times Back-to-Back Australian ANDRA Top Doorslammer Champion John Zappia wrapped up his 2013-2014 season in Sydney at the Australian Nationals with a less than desirable finish but put on a great show for the crowd with his wild drives on a tight and tricky track.

“The meeting was full of drama,” said a lamenting Zappia, “The weather threw big curve balls to all the teams most of the weekend. From thunderstorms to searing heat, the set-up for the Fuchs/Striker Crushing Monaro was challenging and we suffered a lot of tyre shake. The track was really killer, and caught us out with our decision making.”

With pedaling qualifying runs of 6.076 @ 243.55mph and 6.205 @ 221.74mph, Zap slipped behind Kapiris’ 5.790 (top qualified), Bishop 5.954, and Dack 6.033 to take fourth spot in qualifying order.

“Round one ended up a solo as Fabietti could not present. The air dropped quickly to 1000 feet corrected and the Crusher made plenty of power. The car launched hard and straight, started rattling after sixty foot and went right– so I pedaled and punched second. It came around towards the wall so fast I was able to get the car around enough and slide it in sideways to the wall, and idle down through the finish line to the braking area”.

The Zappia Racing crew assessed the damage in the pits and made the call to pull out of the semi-final. The damage was too great to take any risks and as the Championship was already wrapped up.

“The event was disappointing for us, but looking back on the season we are pretty happy with the end result – our seventh back-to-back Championship. It’s a big result for our co-naming rights sponsors – Fuchs Lubricants, and Striker Crushing and Screening. They have supported us in their sponsorship, and we have been able to reward them with a top result again”.

“It was a mixed season with the first three rounds a struggle, then we moved into the winning groove for the next five events after a set-up change allowed us to be more consistent”.

“A big thank you to all the crew who have put in their valuable efforts on this long season. Continued support from our naming, major and supporting sponsors has continued to give the team depth and confidence, and our gratitude is extended to them”.

“Also a big thank you to all our supporters and well-wishers who follow us give us the encouragement to keep putting on an exciting and professional show”.

“There will be no let up as we get back to repair the Fuchs/Striker Crushing Monaro and hopefully be back on track at the Perth Motorplex for the 15th November”.

Zappia Hoping for more Nationals Success at Australian Nationals

Seven times back-to-back Australian Top Doorslammer Champion John Zappia has his eye on some quick times this weekend at the ANDRA “Blow Your Mind” Australian Nationals at Sydney Dragway. The pressure is off after he claimed the championship last meeting in Adelaide, and the country’s quickest Top Doorslammer driver is all fired up.

“Sydney is a special place for the team”, said Zappia, “We have often gone quick there and the Fuchs/Striker Crushing Monaro likes the track. Running the world’s first five-second pass is a great memory for the crew, as were the Nationals wins in 2007 and 2013. So we are keen to do well here this weekend to cap off a great season”.

The team comes off the back of some solid testing in Perth recently, where Zap rattled off a 5.778 in testing.

“We have continued testing a combo to overcome tyre shake in the Crusher, and saw some promising results at the Perth Motorplex that has given us some confidence to go after some quick times this meeting with the championship pressure off”.

“We recommend fans get to this meeting and see some awesome Top Doorslammer action. Adelaide fans just loved the wild racing there last round, and it got my heart pumping with some of the runs – using up all of the track and even tagging the wall on the final run”.

There will also be some exciting and explosive racing to determine the Top Fuel battle between Phil Lamattina and Alan Dobson, as well as Top Alcohol championship decider between Gary Phillips and Steven Ham.

Thirteen teams including the return of Victor Bray, have entered this final Top Doorslammer Round – all will be attempting to qualify for the eight-car field.

Zappia Wins 7th Consecutive ANDRA National Championship with Finals Finish

Six times back-to-back ANDRA Top Doorslammer Champion John Zappia today made history in Australian Drag Racing – by winning his seventh championship in a row with a finals finish at the Fuchs Spring Nationals, the most any racer has won consecutively – a title his good mate Victor Bray held for many years. He did it with one meeting still to go – the Australian Nationals in Sydney.

“Fantastic result for Zappia Racing and our Naming Rights Sponsors Fuchs Lubricants and Striker Crushing and Screening” said Zap, “The team is a little disappointed with the finals loss to O’Rourke, but a great result for the team overall. A big thank you to my Sponsors, Crew and Supporters”.

The Fuchs Spring Nationals was a huge success, thanks to the efforts of Racing Onn Promotion’s Rino D’Alfonso and his team – including Ray Treasure who ran the meeting in partnership with ANDRA. Great weather contributed and brought in the huge crowds to witness some great drag racing from all classes.

Top Doorslammer saw eleven teams represented from around Australia, and qualifying for the eight-car field began on Saturday in great conditions.

“We suffered tyre shake pretty bad in all three qualifying passes, but managed to come in number two behind Bishop. We were experimenting with a combination to try and overcome this dreaded tyre shake – but it ended up worse than ever”.

Final Qualifying order saw Bishop lead with a 5.091 @ 218.43mph, from Zappia 5.099 @ 222.11mph and Fabietti on 5.105 @ 211.36mph. Bump spot was a 5.243 and surprise non-qualifiers Kapiris and Gregorini were out of the meeting.

“I had to go back to basics and put a known combo in the car for this track – I had the data, so we made the changes to run Round 1 up against Marty Dack on Sunday. The track was actually very good, but lane choice was tricky for us in the Fuchs/Striker Crushing Monaro due to my driving position and the poor vision I have when using the mirror to launch from the right lane and also due to the sun on the stage lights”.

“I picked the left lane, and did a crown pleasing fish tail win that actually took some driving to accomplish. I had to pedal twice after shaking and was all over the track trying to stay in it, but managed to take the win with a 5.19 to Dack’s 5.23″.

Other winners were Bishop over Priolo, Fabietti over Goonan, and O’Rourke over Phillips.

“I changed to the right lane for the semi-final against Fabietti – executed a bad light and had to chase him. First gear pulled hard – I punched second and the car rattled a little so I did a tap on the throttle – drove the Crusher hard to overtake Fab and win the round with a 5.06 – low ET of the meeting”.

“The team was elated after the win, as news came through that we had won the championship. After last year’s nail biting finish to the season going right down to the last race, it was a relief to secure the championship with one meeting remaining”.

O’Rourke managed to take out Stuart Bishop who red lit in the other semi-final setting up another battle of the giants in the finals. Zappia and O’Rourke are both long time Western Australian racers who have faced each other numerous times over the years, and with O’Rourke’s return to Top Doorslammer the two have met up together this year more than ever.

“The final was a hard tactical decision for the team. With the sun causing me difficulties on the start line, I chose the left lane – not the best performing lane over the day – but I was confident we could tune the car to get the right wheel speed and maintain traction”.

“Unfortunately the crew positioned me to avoid some blistering on the track surface, and the Crusher was pointed to the left. The car launched hard but went left – I pedaled and just grazed the wall, and came up short of O’Rourke’s winning 5.26 @ 216mph”.

“The result is a great response to our Sponsor’s support – winning the championship for Fuchs at their naming rights event. I managed to call Striker Crushing and Screening’s Director and owner of the Crusher in Malaysia, and he was elated with the win”.

“The Zappia Racing crew is amazing in their dedication and expertise they bring to the team. A big thank-you to them and their efforts. Also a big thanks to our long list of sponsors and supporters who each are significant and have contributed to the overall team performance”.

“This year has not been plain sailing, with the beginning of the season being challenging. We got a little lost chasing some performance – and believe me it is easy to get lost trying to get these brutal Doorslammers down the track competitively – but brought the car back to where we knew it would perform from our data which ensured the wins came”.

The Zappia Racing Team will return to Perth for the Perth Motorplex opening test-n-tune, before heading back to Sydney for the final meeting of the championship season at Sydney Dragway for the Australian Nationals on 31st October. With the Championship all wrapped up the team can concentrate on performing well at the Nationals without thinking about the outcome of the Championship, something that has come down to the last race for the past three seasons.

Zappia Spring Nationals

Reigning ANDRA Top Doorslammer Champion John Zappia is in Adelaide this weekend for the Fuchs Spring Nationals, which is Round 8 of the current series – and hopes to extend his lead and secure a seventh straight championship.

“We are coming off three straight wins this season and our form is good” said Zappia, “The break since Darwin has been great and the team is refreshed, but we are more determined than ever to get the Fuchs/Striker Crushing and Screening Monaro going quick”.

Zap holds a 138-point lead in the championship over Bishop, with O’Rourke a further 126 behind in third. With this event and the final round at the Nationals in Sydney, the champ looks in a strong position.

“Look we are not treating this lightly. Sport at the top level is tough – look what happened to Sydney in the AFL Grand Final – if you are off your game a small amount it could cost you. We are very thorough with our preparation and attention to details at Zappia Racing, and a very strong winning culture that is contagious and confidence building. But we will be trying to eliminate any mistakes that can creep in”.

“Adelaide is a great track for the fans, and our Naming Rights Sponsors Fuchs. The turnout and atmosphere is good, and we hope to entertain and thrill the crowd with the Crusher Monaro, and give our sponsors something to smile about”.

Zappia Can Clinch Top Doorslammer Title in Adelaide

Aussie Drag Racing legend and Top Doorslammer Champion John Zappia could add lucky number #7 to his six consecutive titles since 2008 this weekend at the Fuchs Spring Nationals in Adelaide.

The Fuchs/Striker Monaro has been a dominant force yet again this season coming off three successive ANDRA Drag Racing Series victories to hold a 138 point lead over his nearest rival Stuart Bishop.

Zappia is confident progression through the first round on Sunday should be enough to clinch the title or at the very least heap more pressure on Bishop.

“I’m pretty sure we only need to go past the first round,” says Zappia.

“We’re 138 points ahead. If we both get through the first round, then he can only gain 140 more points if I lost there and went out in the first round in Sydney (at the Australian Nationals).

“He needs to win this event and the next event. There’s a mathematical chance that is pretty well over if we get through the first round.

“I just put it out of my mind and just go for it. At the end of the day if I get eliminated he still has to win the event and then we know we can go pretty good at Sydney. He struggles there so we just put it out of our mind and go racing.

“If we qualify well we should have an easier run in the first round. He qualifies pretty well in Adelaide, he was second last year so we shouldn’t meet until the final like the final we should have had at Calder Park (at the Southern Nationals).”

According to Zap, aside from a Championship showdown the fans at Adelaide International Raceway can expect some lightning quick times as he attempts to break his own track record.

Running over 1000 feet instead of the usual quarter mile, Zappia feels the four-second barrier is realistic with a pass of somewhere in the 4.9 second zone at 230 mph.

“The track was good (last year) and I’m expecting a natural progression. Each time I’ve gone there the track has got better and better.

“We’re hoping we can get the car into the fours this time. We’ve got the track record at 5.03 at 226 or 228 mph, something like that. We’re hoping for a 4.90 at 230 mph.”

Featuring 11 drivers vying for a spot in the eight-car field, Top Doorslammer promises to be a headline attraction alongside Pro Stock Motorcycle and Top Fuel making their first appearance in Adelaide since October 2012.

The Fuchs Spring Nationals will be two days of high-octane Championship Drag Racing action featuring Top Fuel, Top Doorslammer, Pro Stock Motorcycle and the Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship this Saturday and Sunday October 4-5, 2014 at Adelaide International Raceway.

Three wins in a row for Zap

Reigning Top Doorslammer Champion John Zappia is back in the winning groove after taking out Round 7 of the ANDRA Pro Series over the weekend at Hidden Valley Drag Strip in Darwin, Northern Territory. The win comes on the back of wins at the X Champs in Sydney, and the Winternationals at Willowbank that has placed him in a position with the best possible chance of another back-to-back Championship.

“We had another great weekend of racing” said a jubilant Zappia, “The Striker Crushing/Fuchs Lubricants Monaro is really on fire at the moment, running very sweet and predictable and the crew and I have a handle on the car at this level of performance”.

“We really could not have asked for more – top qualifier; lowest ET, quickest mph, event win, and the track record! Apart from a broken valve spring, we had a super reliable event on what was a terrific track”.

Qualifying on the Friday night was between ten competitors – two local Darwin based teams and the rest travelling from various states around Australia. It’s a long trek to Australia’s most northern capital city, but the locals were out in force with their attendance and great hospitality.

Zappia was the only driver to break the five second barrier in qualifying with a 5.978 @ 246.89mph, and a 5.917 @ 251.96mph. The third qualifier was called off due to an oil-down in the braking area late in the evening.  Local driver Mathew Able managed second in his 57 Chev with a 6.08 @ 250.83mph, with Bishop and Gregorini close behind.

“I pedaled on both those passes as the car was moving around a lot and rattling the tyres. The track was much better than we thought – our sixty foot times were slow, so we stepped the car up for eliminations”.

Round 1 saw Zappia 5.845 defeat archrival Grant O-Rourke 6.686, while other winners were Kapiris 5.976 def Gregorini 6.021; Bishop 5.980 def Priolo 6.125; and Abel 5.977 def Dack 7.070.

“That was a great run – sixty foot time was better, and the 254.14 mph was a personal best for the team. We are making good horsepower and finally learnt how to make it stick reliably to the track”.

Semi finals were two great match ups with the quickest cars in Australia represented. Stuart Bishop in his auto Camaro 5.950 took out Abel 6.219, and Zappia 5.901 took out Kapiris 6.005.

That left a stunning final to be run between the top two championship runners – the “top end” fans could not have asked for a better race.

“Another straight pass on a track that just kept getting better. We gave it even more clutch for the final hoping to run another “five eight”.

Unfortunately Stuart Bishop had difficulties on the start line with his trans brake not holding and pulling him through for a red light and giving Zappia the win with a 5.877 pass.

“The Crusher ran like a dream in the final. I was not sure what was going on the other lane while staging. In the end I just ran my own race off my tree and came up with the win. It was a great event for our team and all our sponsors who have made this possible”.

Zappia takes his lead in the Championship out a little with three more rounds to go – the Spring Nationals in Adelaide, and Australian Nationals in Sydney both in October and the Nationals in Calder in December.7

“The dedication of our crew and supporters who give so much depth to this team is showing with the reliability getting much better compared to earlier in the season. We were chasing regular five sevens and five eights earlier to stay ahead of the pack, and that took some time to get out head around how to achieve that. We believe we can go quicker with some more development, and keep up our winning run.

Also enjoying the Darwin event was John’s nephew Brodie who won the Junior Dragster event at his first meeting outside the Motorplex. The event was in a Chicago Shootout format with every racer having three qualifiers and three eliminations with the best-performed racers going through to the final. Brodie was up against current No 1 JD driver Brayden Naylor and won with a 0.032 hole shot to a 0.123 light. This made for a first ever Zappia double and added to the team enjoyment of the top end trip. Brodie now heads to Alice Springs for the Sportsman Series round and hope to continue his good form.

Like Phillips, John Zappia maintained his dominance in Top Doorslammer and looks odds on to win his third Championship round needing only two passes of 5.978 and 5.917 to lead the field even before an oil down put an end to proceedings and chalking off his third run.

It didn’t matter however as Zappia was to be the final pass of the session and it looks like a tough ask to catch him.

“The conditions are a bit tricky here,” said Zappia. “The times we are doing people should be catching us. Kapiris has run 5.80s here; Matt Abel has run 5.86 so it’s only a matter of getting their cars to find the track.

“At the moment we’re going good. I pedalled it in both runs; short shifted and did a couple of little things wrong. We’re still in a good position, we’ve got the number eight qualifier tomorrow so we don’t need to push our limits more than we need to.”

Local Northern Territorian Matt Abel was Zappia’s closest rival qualifying second with a 6.018 from Stuart Bishop, a charging Daniel Gregorini who only made it into the eight car field on his last pass, Peter Kapiris, Pino Priolo, Marty Dack and Grant O’Rourke who will take on Zappia in Round 1 tomorrow for the umpteenth time this year.

John Zappia has won this years prestigious FUCHS Winternationals Australian ANDRA Top Doorslammer event at Willowbank International Raceway in a dominant performance against his 15 opponents.

“That was one of the best race meetings we have performed at,” said a jubilant Zappia after the event, “The weather was great, crowds were huge, and the Willowbank Staff provided us with a very good track that allowed us to match our car to the track superbly. The car was super consistent and reliable all weekend.”

“We were thrilled to win the event for Fuchs – our Co-naming Rights Sponsor and main sponsor of the event. They have shown faith in us and provided valuable sponsorship, and all the hard work our team have put into the car has rewarded us all with the win. We presented Wayne Hoiles, Fuchs CEO, with the winning Gold Christmas Tree as a show of gratitude for the continued support and high quality products. The proof of the quality of the Fuchs Lubricants is evident that in 7 runs, all between 5.763 and 5.869 we did not need to do any maintenance on the motor, diff or gearboxes. After the first the 5.76 runs we checked the bearings and they were like new.”

“We were set up in a prime position alongside the Fuchs PR marque and alongside the Lamatina Top Fuel Racing team, and it was great to meet so many of the Fuchs Staff, clients and Distributors who were invited to the meeting. A special mention also to our major Sponsors Speedmaster who continue to support our racing efforts.”

Qualifying for the event was a highlight for the National Champion, when the Fuchs Lubricants/Striker Crushing and Screening Monaro ran three consecutive “five seven” passes to claim top qualifier, low ET, and Top Speed points (Q1 – 5.766 @ 252.10, Q2 – 5.766 @ 250.78, and Q3 – 5.763 @ 253.33) Phillips 5.884, Kapiris 5.921 and O’Rourke 5.925 were closest out of the 16-car field, with the top 8 all under six seconds.

“It was like the car was on rails. We have been working for 12 months on trying to get a consistent ‘five seven’ car, but the track has always been the problem – keeping the power to the ground. Southside Engine Centre have assisted us in getting our engine package super reliable at this new horsepower level, and the track surface came together nicely to allow us to produce those spectacular runs.”

Round 1 saw Zap with a solo run due to Travaglini unable to present. Zap managed a pedaling 5.809 @ 252.71mph after experiencing a little tyre shake.

“The crew turned the car around with minor servicing and very minute tuning adjustments, and we matched up against danger man Stuart Bishop – my main opponent so far this year and running second in the championship.”

“We both had to pedal after shake, but the Crusher really responded well on the run and a 5.828 @ 252.57mph was too good for Bishop’s 6.137 @ 235.06mph. That meant another tough match up against in-form O’Rourke in the semi – there was no way I could slip in concentration on this one.”

The track seemed to be catching teams out on finals day in Top Doorslammer, with non-representative passes by many. In the Semi fellow West Aussie Gregorini won a place in the final by defeating Cannuli (6.762 @ 208.01mph) with a 6.024 @ 240.94mph pass. Zap did his magic again with another pedaling 5.869 @ 252.28mph win over O’Rourke 7.009 @ 142.19mph after he got into trouble with shake.

“The Crusher was really handling like a dream – other than that niggly shake that we just could not seem to eliminate through adjustments or tuning. Was great to get the win and match up against my fellow Perth Motorplex competitor Daniel in the final.”

The final was a great close race, with Gregorini super sharp on the lights with his two stepping screw set up – 0.072 to Zap’s 0.136. But the huge power of the Fuchs/Striker Crushing Monaro soon hauled him in and took the win with a 5.833 @ 252.90mph to 6.062 @ 236.26mph.

“Fantastic to get the win – I still had to give it a quick pedal in the final, but the car is strong and top end speed is consistently high now. We now improve our position on top of the Championship ladder as we move into the last few race meetings.”

“A big thank you to the crew for a stellar effort this weekend, especially my fulltime mechanic Gerry Andrijich who does an amazing job on the clutch and gearbox and all the work he does in the workshop. The depth of experience shows, and our preparation has been well done. A special thank you to Gerry and Diz for the years of help and support and we wish them well in their future. You are both still an integral part of Zappia Racing and are welcome to be a part of the crew whenever our timetables coincide.”

The team head back to Perth to freshen up Crusher, before heading north to Darwin in the Northern Territory for Round 7 of the ANDRA Championship.

On a sad note, all at Zappia Racing wish Ben Bray a speedy recovery after his horrific crash and also send our best wishes to all the Bray family.

Zappia Wins X Champs in Sydney

Reigning 6 times back-to-back ANDRA Top Doorslammer Champion John Zappia this weekend stamped his authority on his bid to win another straight championship, when he won the X Champs in Sydney Australia and leapt to the top of the points table.

“What a defining moment in our championship race” said a jubilant Zap after the event, “Going into today I have to say I was completely lost in my tune up after yesterdays qualifying – as were many other teams. I am a weather watcher, and my online programs were telling me finals day was going to be just like the day we tested during the week were we did a pedalling 5.9. So I went back to that tune up, and that decision ended up underpinning our days consistent racing”.

Earlier qualifying on the Saturday, where temperatures got down to as low as 14 degrees C (57 degrees F) saw a lot of teams struggle to put down representative passes.  Sixteen cars presented for qualifying to get into the eight-car field. Only two sessions were managed due to the early rain, and later cold temperatures.

Zappia ended up third in qualifying behind Phillips and in-form Bishop. The Fuchs Lubricants/Striker Crushing and Screening HQ Monaro managed a pedalling 6.016 @ 247.38mph, and another pedalling 6.04 @ 246.57 later in the day. After qualifying was abandoned due to cold weather, surprise non-qualifiers were Belleri, Fabietti, O’Rourke and Ben Bray.

“So we went back to Wednesdays tune up, changed a gearbox and lined up against Marty Dack for Round 1. I cut a good .054 light and ran a straight 5.84 @ 251mph to Dack’s red lighting 6.12 @ 223.17mph”

“Just a few quick repairs on the Crusher and a very few fine adjustments to the tune and we presented against my old mate Victor for Round 2. The car ran straight with a hint of shake but I just drove through it for a 5.82 @ 251.72 – fastest speed for the event. Victor got out of it after shaking I think – I never really saw him in my vision.”

So the final was set between rivals Peter Kapiris and John Zappia. A much-anticipated finish, with Kapiris keen to bolster his chances at another Championship – and Zappia wanting to extend his dominance. The Zappia Racing crew turned the car around and presented for the finals.

“I was quietly confident against Pete on the run as he was not as quick as he can be but was still wary of him pulling out a fast run. The car launched well (1.02 60 feet time), but rattled a little bit so I punched second and it hooked up hard moving to the right – a little like Zap’s Rat used to – so I yanked it back hard and ran it through for a 5.79 @ 250.83mph win over Pete’s 5.98 @ 229.66mph. I wiped off some mph with the wander, but a strong back half made up for it”.

“Absolutely fantastic to get the win. Our hard working crew put in a great effort – and they are very calming around me, such is their experience and manner of working”.

With qualifying points, 100 points for winning the event, and gaining low ET and quickest speed John Zappia has leapt to the top of the 2013/2014 Top Doorslammer Championship table above Bishop and a handy break over Kapiris.

“Great result for the team, but still a lot of work to do as it’s a long season. Today was super consistent with 5.84, 5.82 and 5.79 runs and our engine package super strong. A big thanks to Ray Treasure and Sydney Dragway for giving us a killer track this weekend. We were glad we could give Fuchs Lubricants the win, and Craig Pedley from Striker will be over the moon his car has won another Gold Christmas Tree”.

Zappia Racing will head to Willowbank Queensland in a month for Round 6 of Top Doorslammer at the Winternationals.
